My teaching experience covers a broad spectrum of ages from as young as 4 years old up to 16 years of age, with a mixed range of ability. For the past five years I have worked as an assistant art teacher on Saturday mornings and teach a group of approximately 24-30 children ranging in ages from 6 years of age to 10 years of age.

At the beginning of each lesson we implement the same strategy. I give a brief outline to the children of what we will be doing that day and then we give them between 5-10 minutes to sketch out some ideas exploring that day’s theme. This has proven very effective for the children to understand the project from a 2D standpoint to explore their initial ideas.

 

We then further discuss our objective for the relevant art lesson. You are always able to see the progression of ideas, how they have been inspired from our discussion and how they can build upon their initial drawing and translate it into a final piece in a variety of media.
